Statistical Study on the Percentage of Serum Glycoprotein Fractions of the Normal New-Born Infants

Abstract
The serum protein levels of the infants are lesser than that of adults and it was reported as 6.6¡¾0.4 g/100ml, 6.62¡¾0.23 g/100ml or 6.95¡¾0.26 g/100ml by some authors. Additionally it was reported that the levels of.¢¥ each fractions, of the proteins, except alpha2 globulin, were lesser than that of adults, respectively, and that the serum level of immunoglobulins of the infants were 8~25% of that of adults.
Those findings may suggest some differences in serum protin compositions between infants and adults. And the presence of carcinoembryonic antigens, alpha-fetoprotein and some pregnancy proteins were confirmed in the infantile serum, which were not observed in the adults, except in certain specific conditions. Those specfiic proteins within infantile serum were chemically glycoproteins.
Thus the authors designed this experiment to confirm the differences in the compositions of glycoproteins between the infants and adults. By the zip zone electrophoresis kit, Ponceau 2R, periodic-acid-Schiff¢¥s staining, and Quik scanner, the authors estimated the percentage of each fractions of proteins and glycoproteins of the serum, which obtained .from infant¢¥s toe at 1 hour, 1 day and 2 days after delivaries, respectively.
The following results were ensued;
1. The total amounts of infantile serum proteins were lesser than that of adults.
2. The levels of each fractions of infantile serum proteins, except alpha2 globulin, were lesser than that of adults, respectively.
3. The percentages of each glycoprotein fractions of infantile sera, except alpha, glycoprotein, were lesser than that of adults.
4. The percentage of infantile alpha, glycoprotein were significantly higher than that of adults.
